Hakone Freepass: price, what it covers, and whether it pays
The Hakone Freepass costs ¥7,100 for 2 days from Shinjuku and ¥6,000 from Odawara[1]. One loop of Hakone bought as single tickets costs ¥8,290 from Shinjuku and back, so the pass saves ¥1,190 on a single loop (¥470 from Odawara), with each operator's fares checked on 19 October 2026. The Romancecar charge, ¥1,200 each way from Shinjuku, is extra[1].

One person[1]. The Shinjuku pass includes one Odakyu round trip from Shinjuku to Odawara on ordinary trains[1]. Prices rose by ¥1,000 on 1 October 2025[24]; no change has been announced since. On sale from one month before the first day of use.[25]
It covers: Hakone Tozan Train, Hakone Tozan Cable Car, Hakone Tozan Bus, KANKO SHISETSU-MEGURI Bus (Tourist Attraction Sightseeing Bus), Hakone Sightseeing Cruise, Hakone Ropeway, Odakyu Highway Bus, Tokai Bus[25]. Not covered: Romancecar limited express charge; Izu-Hakone Bus services; Komagatake Ropeway (a discounted fare only); Special room on the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (a discount on the one way charge only)[1]. Show the pass at the facility for a special offer or discount on admission, hot springs, dining and some other transport. About 70 places take part[1].

Does it pay? The Hakone loop in single tickets
The loop runs Hakone-Yumoto, Gora, Sounzan, Owakudani, Togendai, Lake Ashi and back by bus[24]. Single fares are each operator's own, for one person[2][4][3][5].

Single tickets use the cheaper through ticket from Odawara to Gora. The Romancecar charge is paid on top either way. A second day of rides adds to the saving.
From Tokyo to Hakone
- Odakyu Romancecar, Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. Direct, all seats reserved, about 80 minutes[6]. 2,470 yen for one person: 1,270 fare plus 1,200 charge[2].
- Odakyu Rapid Express to Odawara, then Hakone Tozan Line. No charge, change at Odawara, about two hours[6][2].
- Tokaido Shinkansen, Tokyo to Odawara, then Hakone Tozan Line. With a Japan Rail Pass, the Shinkansen to Odawara is covered; buy the Hakone Freepass from Odawara (6,000 yen for 2 days) for the rest[1][7].
The Japan Rail Pass covers nothing past Odawara: the Hakone Tozan Railway and the Odakyu Line are not on JR's list of lines the pass covers[28].
All seats reserved. On sale from 10:00 (Japan time) one month before departure, online on EMot Online Tickets, at Odakyu station windows and ticket machines; 50 yen less online.[6]

The Hakone Tozan Railway
- Runs 8.9 km from Hakone-Yumoto to Gora in about 40 minutes.[3]
- Opened in 1919.[3]
- Climbs gradients up to 80 per mille (8 percent), which the operator calls the steepest for an adhesion railway.[3]
- Three switchbacks: Deyama signal stop, Ohiradai Station and Kami-Ohiradai signal stop. The driver and conductor change ends at each; passengers cannot get on or off at the two signal stops.[3]
- The Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto section (6.1 km) is part of the same Hakone Tozan Line, with local trains and Romancecars.[2]
- The 100 series cars retire in January 2028.[29]
- The cable car climbs 209 m over 1.2 km from Gora to Sounzan in about 10 minutes; opened in 1921; today's fifth generation cars entered service in March 2020.[3]
- Hydrangeas along the line bloom from around mid June, when the line is called the Hydrangea Train; along the cable car they bloom from mid June to mid July.[3]
Closures announced
- Hakone Ropeway, Owakudani to Sounzan, Mon 7 Dec 2026 to Thu 24 Dec 2026. Closed for inspection; replacement buses about every 15 minutes, about 10 minutes. The Hakone Freepass is valid on them.[8]
