The White Pass Summit Excursion costs US$155 for one person booked with the railway[1], about 2.5 to 2.75 hours from Skagway to the summit and back; the cruise lines' own pages show US$174 to US$249.99 for their summit trips[2][3][4][5], checked on 19 October 2026. These are 2026 prices: the railway says 2027 bookings open in early November 2026[6].

Direct or through your cruise line
The railway says cruise passengers can book its tours through their ship's shore excursion department, and then board the train on the pier beside the ship[1]. Its FAQ says travellers board on each of Skagway's three piers[47].

The line
Passenger trains run 67.5 miles between Skagway and Carcross[9]. The railway reopened in 1988 between Skagway and the summit, reached Bennett in the 1990s and Carcross in 2007[26]. The train climbs from sea level in Skagway to White Pass Summit at Mile 20.4, 2,865 feet up, on grades of almost 3.9%[25][48]. Narrow gauge, rails three feet apart[25].
- Gold was found in the Klondike in August 1896, and the first steamship of gold seekers landed at Skagway on 27 July 1897[23].
- Building began on 27 May 1898 up the middle of Broadway in Skagway[23][24].
- The first train ran on 21 July 1898, over the first four miles[25][26].
- Track reached White Pass Summit in February 1899; the first passenger train climbed to the top on 20 February 1899[26].
- Trains reached Lake Bennett on 6 July 1899[26].
- Crews from north and south met at Carcross, where the golden spike was driven on 29 July 1900[25][26].
- About 35,000 people worked on the line over two years, and it cost $10 million[25][23].
- Steam power ended in 1954, when diesel electric engines took over[26].
- The railway stopped in 1982 when metal prices fell and mines closed, and reopened for visitors in 1988[26].
- It was named an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1994[25].
- The fleet's steam engines are No. 73, a 1947 Baldwin, and No. 69, a 1907 Baldwin[25].
Getting to Skagway
- By cruise ship. Ships tie up at the docks at the south end of town. The NPS visitor center at Second Avenue and Broadway, beside the railway's depot, is less than half a mile from all of the docks[49][24]. The town's SMART bus runs dock to downtown from 7 am to 9 pm when ships are in port, $5 for an all day pass[50].
- By ferry. State ferries link Juneau and Skagway; the main line calls at Haines first. AMHS gives 4 hours 30 minutes from Juneau to Haines and 1 hour from Haines to Skagway[51]. The fare from Juneau is US$66 one way for one person on foot with no vehicle, on an October 2026 sailing[52]; the summer 2027 schedule is not published yet[53].
- By air. Alaska Seaplanes flies between Juneau and Skagway, up to 7 times a day in summer and 3 in winter[54]. Direct flights take 40 to 45 minutes in its autumn 2026 timetable[55]. The railway says its depot is a 10 minute walk from Skagway airport[47]. One way from US$209 for one person in late October 2026[56].
- By road. From Whitehorse the South Klondike Highway runs to Skagway: Travel Yukon gives 176 km (109 miles) and about 2.5 hours[57]. Carcross is 73 km (45 miles) from Whitehorse[58]. The road crosses the border at White Pass.
