Glacier Express prices, Excellence Class and timetable
The Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz costs CHF 220 for one person in 2nd class: CHF 166 for the ticket and CHF 54 for the compulsory seat reservation[1]. 1st class is CHF 338 and Excellence Class CHF 874[1]. The trip takes about 8 hours over 291 km[2], checked on 19 October 2026. No trains run from 11 October to 4 December 2026, and again from 10 October to 3 December 2027[3][4].

Every passenger needs a seat reservation. It is CHF 54 in 1st or 2nd class for long and short journeys alike; Excellence Class is CHF 590. Travel cards do not cover it.[1] Ticket prices are full fares[1].

Tickets only; the CHF 54 reservation is the same for short and long trips[1].
With a rail pass
The Swiss Travel Pass, Eurail and Interrail passes cover the ticket and the Half Fare Card reduces it, but every passenger still pays the seat reservation[1][42][43].
Excellence Class
Excellence Class is a CHF 590 seat reservation on top of a 1st class ticket or pass[44]. It buys a window seat at a table for two, a five-course menu with wine, champagne, and access to the Glacier Bar, in a carriage of 20[44]. Bar spirits and cocktails, bottles from the wine list, and any further glass of champagne (CHF 15) or wine (CHF 12) are paid separately.[45]
Lunch on board
Lunch is cooked on board and served at your seat: the menu valid to 31 March 2027 lists two courses at CHF 45, three at CHF 54 and four at CHF 58[46]. Pre-ordering is advised[47].

When seats go on sale, and where to sit
Seat reservations in 1st and 2nd class go on sale 93 days before travel and tickets 180 days before. Excellence Class can be reserved for the whole timetable year from October.[1] The operator advises booking early because demand is high. Seat reservations are required on every train.[42]
Seats on a given side or facing forward cannot be booked: the train changes direction during the trip. The operator points out the Bis Glacier on the left, about 10 minutes out of Zermatt. In Excellence Class every seat is a window seat.[42]
Space is limited: the operator suggests one piece besides hand luggage. Jaisli Mobility Service delivers bags anywhere in Switzerland by 6 pm on the travel day if booked by 5 pm the day before.[1]
The line
The Glacier Express runs 291 km from Zermatt to St. Moritz in about 8 hours, over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels[2][49]. Its highest point is the Oberalp Pass at 2,033 metres, and from Thusis to St. Moritz it runs on the Albula Line, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008[50][51].
You can board or leave at Zermatt, Brig, Andermatt, Chur, Filisur, Samedan or St. Moritz. Some pairs are too short to book; short trips such as St. Moritz to Chur run only in the summer timetable on trains 900, 901, 906 and 907.[42] Travellers from Davos change to the Glacier Express at Filisur.[50]

Zermatt is car-free. Cars go as far as Täsch, where the Matterhorn Terminal has 2,100 covered parking spaces; from there a shuttle train or a licensed taxi covers the last stretch.[52] The Zermatt Shuttle from Täsch takes 12 minutes and runs every 20 minutes from 5:55 to 21:55. A return costs CHF 17.20; SBB sells a single for CHF 8.60 now and CHF 9.00 for March 2027.[53][54]
